Javad Foroughi won Iran’s first medal for the men’s 10-meter air pistol event last Saturday, which made some curious about how he had been practicing, after it was revealed that he is a member of a terrorist organization. It is the only medal the country has won so far.
This was the 41-year-old’s first appearance at the Olympics, and somehow being part of a terrorist organization did not disqualify him from competing. Foroughi is a member of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which was labeled a terrorist organization by the US in 2019.
Iranian human rights organization United for Navid slammed the International Olympics Committee after they posted a tweet praising Foroughi for his win at the Tokyo Olympics.
