A teenager who was dragged off his surfboard by a shark at a popular surfing spot in Perth says he thought he was going to die.

Sav Marafioti, 17, was surfing about 25m offshore at Toms Surf Break in North Beach when a 1.5m bronze whaler clutched his leg rope on Sunday morning.

“I thought I was going to die. I didn’t know what to do.
