Tesla Recalling More Than 2 Million Vehicles Over A Faulty Autopilot Drive-Assist System

The Tesla Autopilot system does not include sufficient controls to prevent driver misuse

Tesla

(Road And Track) Tesla is recalling nearly every car it has sold in the U.S. due to concerns over the Autopilot driver-assist system. In certain circumstances when Autosteer is engaged, the feature’s controls may not be sufficient to prevent driver misuse and lead to an increased risk of a crash, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said.

A series of crashes that involved Tesla vehicles while the Autopilot system was engaged led to a two-year long NHTSA investigation. A total of 322 Autopilot-involved crashes were part of the investigation. The recall includes most vehicles Tesla has sold in the U.S. including the Model X, Model S, Model Y, and Model 3. The vehicles impacted by the recall were produced between October 5, 2012, and December 7, 2023.

The defect causing the recall is with the Tesla basic Autopilot package, which includes SAE Level 2 advanced driver-assistance features, including Autosteer. NHTSA reported that “In certain circumstances when Autosteer is engaged, the prominence and scope of the feature’s controls may not be sufficient to prevent driver misuse of the SAE Level 2 advanced driver-assistance feature.”
