(Not The Bee) First off, as a Texan I feel it necessary to say that there’s Texas and then there’s Austin. If they weren’t the seat of our government, we’d expel the city from the state.
Secondly, the Democrats have run Austin for years, and now the city is paying for it.
Let’s start with Travis County District Attorney Jose Garza, who was backed by George Soros’s PAC and has a soft-on-crime, hard-on-cops approach to the law.
You’ll recognize his handiwork in this famous case:
In contrast, he’s also refused to prosecute or given greatly reduced sentences to serial rapists, mass shooters, and, of course, violent rioters.
In addition to going after people defending themselves, he has pushed a record number of indictments of police officers – many illegally defyingcourt orders.

What officer in his right mind would want to work in a city with a DA like that?
Not many.
It’s been two years since Austin police stopped responding to non-emergency calls because of low officer numbers.
You can imagine how much crime has risen since then.
In fact, it’s gotten so bad that they’ve had to redefine what an emergency call is.
Being attacked and robbed isn’t included.
They’ve even introduced a new phone number that you can call and be ignored by.
Being bloodied and battered by a robber? Call 3-1-1

But you dare not defend yourself, or Jose Garza will prosecute you too.
All that said, the Austin Police Department wants us to know they’re trying to recruit new people.
In the wake of saint George Floyd, Austin slashed their police budget in a “defund the police” fiasco, resulting in the loss of hundreds of officers. But now in 2023, they’ve passed the highest police budget ever.
