(PM.) A federal judge on Thursday ordered that former Trump advisor and War Room host Steve Bannon report to prison on July 1 to begin his four-month prison sentence. Bannon was found guilty of two counts of contempt of Congress for defying subpoenas from the J6 Committee. He was sentenced in October 2022, but the sentence had been paused pending an appeal.
Conservatives raised concerns over Bannon being ordered to prison, calling it the “death of the judicial system.”
Rep. Matt Gaetz said, “It is with great sadness and anger that we observe the death of the judicial system in America. Steve Bannon sought judicial review of the illegal demands of a runaway congressional committee, unlike any ever comprised. It was literally a matter of first impression.”
“And they’re sending him to prison – not just to torture him but to torture us. He didn’t even get a real trial. His defenses were stripped by a judge who hates him. The ramifications of these actions will reverberate in a very dark way for a long time,” he added.
Gaetz noted that he had “begged house leaders to advance legislation to expunge these contempt proceedings” against those like Bannon, but “they refused, likely because we don’t have the votes.”
