In an epic prank call, Carlson called Canada’s press office and left the following message: “This is Tucker Carlson from the United States. And I’d be grateful if you’d pass on a message to the Prime Minister Justin Trudeau:
“We are coming to liberate Canada. We are coming to liberate Canada, and we’ll be there soon. Mercí.”

X boss Elon Musk reacted to the video by expressing his approval and amusement with fire emojis.
Carlson made the call in advance of his trip to Calgary, Alberta, where he will share a stage with Alberta Premier Danielle Smith. The two will appear at the Telus Convention Center on January 24. Carlson will also be making remarks in addition to a conversation wtih local businessmen and Smith.
In November 2023, a petition was launched to try to ban Carlson from entering Canada. It was signed by 3,912 out of a hoped for 5,000. Carlson was outspoken with his support for the Freedom Convoy as well, which was a thorn in Trudeau’s side.
When asked by CTV about Smith’s appearance with the man who is incredibly controversial in Canada, Smith’s office issued the statement that “The premier participates in a variety of public and private events and does interviews with dozens of reporters, broadcasters and podcasters from across the political spectrum.”
Smith’s press office was also careful to distance themselves from Carlson, saying “Obviously, she does not subscribe to every view of every interviewer or reporter she speaks with whether that’s the CBC, the Toronto Star, or Tucker Carlson.”
There’s also been some pushback against Carlson’s visit to Calgary, with NDP Leader Rachel Notley saying that Carlson “is not a credible figure.”
