A bill that prohibits transgender girls from competing in girls’ sports in Kentucky was vetoed last week, but due to the Republican supermajority, it is now law.
The Senate voted 29-8, largely along party lines, to override the veto of SB 83. Then the bill went to the House, where lawmakers also overrode the veto.
With the General Assembly moving forward in agreement, the “Fairness in Women’s Sports Act” now is law in Kentucky.
The legislation is mirrored after similar measures that have passed in other states. It bans transgender girls from participating in school sports that match their identity, and applies to students in sixth grade to college.
