Democratic California Governor Gavin Newsom signed new legislation on Tuesday that’s intended to crack down on the use of AI generated memes, parodies and deepfakes in political ads in the lead-up to this November’s election.

California bills AB 2655, AB 2839, and AB 2355 covers the posting of deceptive content on large social media platforms related to California elections, covering a timeframe that lasts from 120 days prior to Election Day to 60 days past it.

Elon Musk chimed in, posting his disbelief of the bills.
