In June, The Daily Wire published the names and towns of some 4,200 teachers who vowed to violate laws prohibiting critical race theory in the classroom, saying the laws “aim to prohibit teachers from teaching the truth about this country: It was founded on the dispossession of Native Americans, slavery, structural racism and oppression; and structural racism is a defining characteristic of our society today.”
“We, the undersigned educators, refuse to lie to young people about U.S. history and current events — regardless of the law,” the signatories said. The pledge was drafted by the Zinn Education Project, which is named after Howard Zinn, whose FBI file says he taught a class in Marxism at Communist Party Headquarters in Brooklyn.
Parents found the first list useful to know what teachers to avoid in their school districts. Two thousand more teachers signed the pledge in the last two months.
Many signed with comments like “I will never stop teaching for justice, equity, and anti-racism!” That was Anneliese Steuben-Maiye of Vashon, Washington.
Jenna Brito of Tucson, Arizona wrote, “I will not let the white establishment silence me. I will continue to teach an accurate account of history. This includes teaching about how racism, sexism, xenophobia, etc is deeply embedded into our society and how it continues to shape out [sic] experiences.”
