Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has tested positive for COVID-19 and is exhibiting “mild” symptoms, according to a statement released by the Defense Department. Austin is fully vaccinated and boosted and photographic accounts indicate that he was incredibly careful, wearing a full visor as well as masking even while outdoors.

Austin said he tested positive Sunday morning for COVID-19 after he requested the test for exhibiting symptoms while at home on leave. “I am following my physician’s directions,” Austin added in the press release, noting that he will quarantine for the next five days in accordance with CDC guidelines.
“I have informed my leadership team of my positive test result, as well as the President. My staff has begun contact tracing and testing of all those with whom I have come into contact over the last week,” Austin said Sunday.
