Video: Master Sommelier Reveals That People Are Drinking Champagne The WRONG Way

Daily Mail

(Daily Mail) A wine expert has revealed why you shouldn’t drink Champagne out of a flute.

Master Sommelier Olivier Krug, from Krug Champagne, was a guest on the ‘Got Somme’ podcast hosted by Angus O’Loughlin and Carlos Santos.

In the 18-minute episode, he suggested using ‘proper’ glassware – such as a pinot noir or chardonnay glass – to taste all the elements of the champagne.

‘Never ever drink champagne in a flute. It’s like going to the opera with earplugs, you miss everything,’ Olivier said.

The claims shocked thousands after a short video was shared on Instagram.

Olivier said a few years ago he created the social media hashtag ‘No Flute’ after realising the vast majority of people use the tall, thin glass to drink champagne.

‘I’m passionate [about] glassware. I was shocked, to be honest, to see the number of people who were given a great bottle of champagne and serving in a flute,’ he said.

He questioned why anyone would want to serve ‘beautiful’ expensive champagne in a flute.

‘Let’s say Grande Cuvee, it took 20 years to craft this bottle. It took 20 years of passion to get together all this element, richness and generous character and you put it in a flute where people will feel nothing,’ Olivier continued.

He said you need the right glass otherwise ‘everything will escape’, impacting the taste.

‘You need a proper glass or even pinot noir glasses that are extremely good to release what requires 20 years to be prepared for your pleasure,’ he added.
